This guy has been around in my ears for ages. I do really admire the deep integrity of him, how he's been challenging himself, his record labels as well as his audience. He's always been on the tip of his toes, no matter what he's been doing and still do. Some albums over the years has been disasterous in my ears, but nethertheless I respect it, he's just following his heart and in the end he always land in some good direction.
So, when listening to "Zuma" today I realised I just had to write a few words on him. The album is filled with excellent pop music, some country tunes (I'm definitely not a fan of country music, but these are great), some acoustic moments and - finally - the two tracks 'Danger Bird' and 'Cortez the Killer', two slow, beautiful tunes filled with his barbed wired guitar playing which makes the hair on my arms stand straight - oh, how good it is!!!
There are many reasons to come back to this guy...

It's a great 3 hour set of constructive ambience put together in a creative and clever way from tracks, or part of tracks, from various artists (like JoxProX).

A couple of weeks ago I went to see a gig by the legendary Swedish prog-psych-trance band Träd Gräs & Stenar.
Except some intermissions of various length they have been around since late 60's as Pärson Sound > International Harvester > Harvester > Träd Gräs & Stenar. The members of the groups has been the same more or less. The core for longest time has been Bo Anders Persson (guitar, vox), Thomas Mera Gartz (drums, vox), Jakob Sjöholm (guitar, vox) & Torbjörn Abelli (bass, vox).
A couple of years ago Bo Anders took the decision to quit, partly because of tinnitus, maybe a bit tired of touring and maybe because of reaching a respectfully age. The band decided to go on with Reine Fiske (Dungen, etc) as new force on solo guitar.
In summer 2010 Torbjörn sadly passed away in borelia.
At least I thought I'd seen the band for the last time. Obviously, after some time had slipped, they took another decision, to go on with Sigge Krantz on bass. Sigge might have avoide the spotlight but had been around for years as musician, recording engineer etc, so he was a part of the movement, so to speak.
When watching their concert they also had added Thomas Tidholm (sax, flute, vox) who had been a member of the band before the TG&S incarnation.
My expectation was rather high and I wasn't disappointed. All guys are great musicians, they mix long improvised, psychedelic space-trance-minimalistic powerful tunes with shorter written tunes with vocals. All within the frame of their unique sound. Second set added Thomas T and it all when into sung-based material even though it also went away for longer instrumental parts. As someone said, Thomas is kind of the Tuli Kupferberg of the band. He was so funny and thoughtful, delivering bananas to the audience.
There was no actual merchandise, but I saw that Jakob had a plastic bag with some vinyl albums and as I knew they recently had released the 'Gärdet 12.6.1970' live CD in a vinyl version I asked him if he had a copy of that. This very humble and polite guy had to excuse, he did only have one copy left and he had promised it to a 20-year old girl in the audience. "Of course she shall have it", I said, happy to know that the youngsters are attractive to these phychedelic sounds. Jakob said he thought the vinyl edition might be sold out, but when back home he could check it out by the guy responsible for the release, if there was any left and then send it to me. "Great" I said and we exchenged email addresses. A couple of days ago there was an email in my inbox: "I've found a copy and I've send it to you, you can pay to my account..." and the next day it was in my snail-mail box.
The album? Holy cow, I've heard it on CD, but now, with this expanded 2 x LP version on beautiful splash colour vinyl - what a sound! what a dynamic! what music!!! and also added a sidelong 22 minute track as a bonus. Mighty, mighty, this is good!!!
So, thanX Jakob for being such a nice and generous fellow doing this great gesture.

The festival of Gärdet? It should be at Skeppsholmen in the central of Stockholm as the first alternative, non-commercial, out-door festival in Sweden. The residental companies and offices at this tiny island did protest and the police said No to the event just the day before and some very quick arrangemtns had to be done to move it to the Gärdet field about 5 kilometers from there.

It took me some 39 years to get it, but now it's mine!
I'm not the guy who must buy loads of souvenirs at concerts. I might buy some records if there are any at those events, that's nice, but t-shirts, posters, programs, whatsoever, isn't important for me.
But this particular item I always have thought belongs to my highly advanced dress-code, but for no reason at all it just didn't happen that I bought it. Until now, through Jonny at PlanetGong.
The t-shirt is the cover of Gong's 'Camembert Electric' album (Byg 1971, Virgin 1974), the first real Gong album, and it was drawn and designed by Daevid Allen. Actually, when the t-shirt first showed up I have no idea, but it has been around for ages, probably mid-70's or so.

Such a great woman she is, such an artist. Mixing wild wailing improvisations with tender and sweet melodies with huge artistic integrity, no matter if it's 1970 or almost 40 years later. People couldn't take her vocals style, people thought she split The B. So stupid they were, so ignorant. Imagine the notes of her voice came from a saxophone - see there! Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, Mats Gustafsson - name it, it would have had the same dignity of free form spirit. And The B? If it wasn't for her I think JL would have left a couple of years earlier, frustrated by being locked into something he couldn't manage any longer. So, thanX Yoko for just being the great artist you are! ThanX for being!

It's uplifting, it's rewarding, it should have a place in every persons aural life.

In 1989 the Dutch avante-punkers The Ex took another step into The Art of Making Interesting Music - they opened up for improvisations, they started experimenting on records and they invited a lot of guests. The result of this can be heard on the wonderful 2 disc album Joggers & Smoggers, a collection of 34 very inspiring tracks of various kind.
I have always loved artists putting together their albums as kind of collages and when listening to J&S my mind slips into another important album of that time that always has made great impact on me, Step Across The Border by Fred Frith.
These two albums do have a lot in common - but they don't know it yet.
Lend both of them both of your ears for a while and you'll find out what!

Filled myself with a couple of Taliskers and put this on, let the nostalgia flow over me... but, wait... is it nostalgia? No, no, no... nothing like that even though this album was my favourite Christmas present in 1971, 40 years ago (Mah God! how time flies!)... no, it's much more than that... it's a wonderful heavy riff and even though the original track on Chicago Transit Authority is magnificent in itself, this is a 15½ minutes version that really takes off, leaving Terry Kath in one of his greater moments (and there was a lot of them), sometimes with Robert Lamm treating the organ also very inspring, battling along. A great piece of music by a really talanted band that got lost in AOR hell just shortly after. How could this happen???!!!!

Comment: the unsung juggernauts of krautrock and the champions of avant-prog/experimental rock are back with their brand new heavy one. The first impression of mine is that the Swedish duo seems to be so loud and defiant as never being before. There are up 4 tracks, first time after a while not being issued on Clinical Archives. However, these long-running compositions are filled in with the shards of abrasive sonic metal and razor-edged smithereens, thereby challenging the eminent noise concept of rock done ever before - from My Bloody Valentine`s charming guitar noise and The Jesus & Mary Chain`s dirty feedback-centered resonation to harsh, obsessive concepts of Fushitsusha, and Gerogerigegege and, on the other side, (Le) Fly Pan Am`s (N`Ecoutez Pas) arty noise episodes and post-rock-mixed vistas and Borbetomagus` free jazz-relied improvised noise. Furthermore, the second part of the 3rd track/part (Ola & The Jugglers) does have managed to acquire a highly rhythmic template below the shrieking massives of guitar riffs and "indecipherable" sort of trash (you can perceive even fusion-alike progressions emitting out from it!) and the closing development Cats Sing Strange Songs fuses some sorts of experimental tendencies into glacial glow-hued ambient music. The result is as powerful as JP`s aspirations proclaimed on a handful of the albums before, though, this times having a little different point of view and galvanized aspect. However, you can call it even the kind of white metal, because of its enormous, braw shape (though having more frantic impetus within it). Well done, Oax, and Yan."

Of course we thank our favourite guy Kert Semm a lot for his very generous review of our music, it's people like him that makes us want to go on doing weird sounds like these, keeps us on the track.

After that the evening was fullfilled by visiting Soldat Svejk, the genuine Czech pub, spending hours by their beer taps...

Reflections on Keith Tippett's Ark, Fire! Orchestra & Stuff

13 days since Christmas Eve, the Christmas tree still looks great, not a needle on the floor.
Sitting by the kitchen table, writing some diary notes, looking out trough the window, the sky is all blue, it looks a bit cold outside, no snow, but a beautiful winter day in this normally rainy city.
The music that recently has been played is the 2LP version of Keith Tippett's Ark "Frames - Music for an Imaginary Film", a FANTASTIC album with as well FANTASTIC players (Keith Tippett, Stan Tracey, Elton Dean, Trevor Watts, Brian Smith, Larry Stabbins, Marc Charig, Henry Lowther, Dave Amis, Nick Evans, Maggie Nicols, Julie Tippetts, Steve Levin, Rod Skeaping, Phil Wachsmann, Geoffry Wharton, Alexandra Robbins, Tim Cramer, Peter Kowald, Harry Miller, Louis Moholy, Frank Perry - Homage to all of them!). Jazz (or "jazz?") composition can't be much better than this. It invites to improvisation and collective joy.
But the reflection goes: Why are there so few of them, these compositions for big ensembles? And I'm not talking Big Band jazz. Ok, it might be a matter of time, money and lots of grey hair (for the composer/director), but nevertheless, why are there so few of them?
Do I have any answer? Of course not.

Which brings me to next Fridays event at Fylkingen, Stockholm, where Fire! Orchestra will bring something to us. The core of Fire! (Mats Gustafsson, Johan Berthling & Andreas Werlin) will lead (or maybe like Miles did, Directions by...) an ensemble of about 30 people coming from highly skilled improvisation, jazz, psych, etc scene of Sweden.
Where to put the expectations? Well, maybe a bit unfair to the involved (they're only humans, aren't they?), but the expactations might be a bit sky high, or at least close to the tree tops, the star of the Christmas tree, or where you put it yourself... Whatever it will be, I hope they record it.
And the two bums of Joxfield will be sitting there in the audience...

Tired of harsh aural moments? If so, but still ready for some attention, concentration and some good music, here's what you should go looking for: Lars Gullin (1928-1976), the genius Swedish barytone sax player. As often with great musicians like these they lived all too short, but left footprints bigger than any shoes could fit into. Majestic!
I don't remember if these two 2LP sets have been released on CD, but they are not too hard to find on vinyl for ok price. Much funnier that way!
And it's not any coinsidence that Mats Gustafsson's band Swedish Azz pays their tribute to Swedish treasures like Lars Gullin, Lasse Werner, Färnlöf, etc etc.
They can't be wrong, can they?

The pick this time is the excellent psychedelic space rock band Hills. Even though they do have their roots elsewhere it seems like they've settled in our nice hometown Gothenholm Stockburg. And we fully enjoy their laid-back psychedelic music.
Their self-titled debute is a great one, but even greater is the next to come, Master Sleeps. There are various versions of the albums, but we prefere the LPs on Intergalactic Tactics Records. Right into our hearts!

The Pond Intermezzo (2006) was Joxfield ProjeX 4th release in a year. It was a 3 CD set and consisted of more than 3 hours of music. Its only release so far was self-printed in 20 copies which mostly were given away to friends in urgent need of new Joxfield ProjeX music. The first track on CD 2 is 'Dark Pitch', the track below, a dark dense psychedelic, mostly improvised marsch, also Part 1 in the Black Night Theme Suite (Mah God! where did all these names come from?).

Here's a mighty majestic 2LP + ½ 7" album by Tarfala Trio - some of the best improvised trio music you can get these days.
Mats Gustafsson blows his horns, Barry Guy speak to his bass like he (or it?) was God and Raymond Strid, ahh, Raymond Strid, what a percussive master he is - whatever he can't do with percussion has not to be done at all.
Four side-long tracks (+ the single-sided 7"), recorded live in Belgium and released in a most beautiful package, including a 12" photo-book, by the high quality Lithuania label NoBusiness Records.
Yet another day has been aurally saved.

This is one of the world's most underestimated band ever in my personal opinion, and when the book of rock and psychedelic music is written over and over again the band is often sadly overlooked. And it's a shame because the were so bloody good. Four albums (5 LPs) in little more than one year - and what a year!
Some of the tracks might be a bit dated, but most of them are classics amongst Joxfield friends and families. And God! how drunk we were when we tried to dance to some of them in those days.
The band? EB, of course, but also Berry Jenkins (drums) from the old Animals, and then added with Vic Briggs (guitar - the powerful attack-riff on Sky Pilot - it's his!), John Weider (guitar, violin) and Danny McCulloch (bass). For EOoU Zoot Money (keys, vocals) was added and for Love Is VB and DM left, Andy Summers joined (guitar - his 5 minutes solo on Coloured Rain is one of rock history's Top 10 guitar excesses).
A good bunch of albums to spend the day before Christmas Eve.

Fridge Leftovers Comes Alive by joxfieldprojex

First came the rain, then the snow, just like an ordinary Swedish winter.
This is an un-released track from the infamous 2009 Novemeber Session at Camp Kolpebo. A week-long day and night session. The result became a lot of rough mixes of 4 hours of music, sounds & visions.
Four of the tracks found the daylight on the VoxLuxRabax album this year.

One of the plans was also to record a kind of pop music album during that session, Captain Solar Disk Cocooning (in the Joxfield ProjeX way (which means not THAT much pop)), a collection of tunes mostly with vocals. 'Fridge Leftovers Comes Alive' is one of these tracks, a bit jazz influenced.
Yan: Basic pattern, bass, programmed drums, keyboard (including one of the few, but very appreciated moments when Yan flip the keys and becomes a real live musician, which he sometimes pretend he's not)
Oax: Words, improvised sort of melody, guitar, ebow
Recorded live over the basic pattern with just one overdub each.

Anytime, anywhere when I need to clean my messy mind I put on this record. It has been a part of the life of Joxfield och friends for almost 40 years and it has never failed it's mission - to bring us joy and rock n roll. So, when stumbling around in the city, trying to fix what has to be fixed with Christmas gifts, et cetera, being forced to hear one version worse than another of crappy Christmas songs playing in every "#¤%& loudspeaker in every "#¤%%& store, I find myself coming to an end: This Is It!!!!
Then I go back home, turn the original Iggy & The Stooges album on. Ron, Scott, James & Iggy save my mind once again. ThanX!!!

Back to normal again, when the messy mind has been cleared, this is the choise. Could actually have been almost any album by these magnificent Japanese paychedelic weirdos from inside outa space. By releasing about 5 - 10 AMT related albums a year a single pick isn't the easiest task, but nevermind... I go for the newest one. A Mothers album a day keeps the doctor away (but Santa close enough to bring you gifts...)

Maybe not too much of an alternativ Christmas album, but can't stop being fascinated by the crackling voice of this legendary old goat. And, if anyone would have a time machine in 1966 and had sended Mr BD to our time, showing him this album, what would he have said? (The Times They Are a-Changin') Anyway, in a world where the two best un-alternative Christmas albums are Dean Martin's Making Spirits Bright and Kurt Olsson's Jul KURT med Damorkestern even Mr BD's album can match a bit.

It was 3 evenings/nights 3 - 5th of November 2006, the Gong Uncon at Melkweg in Amsterdam. Me 'n' Yan were there together with 1500 or so Gongster from all around the world. Head-line the first night was Acid Mothers Gong - Daevid, Gilli, Josh, Hiroshi, Atsushi, Yoshida & Kawabata - freaking out for 70 minutes of poetic varieté and variable music improvisations.
Mighty nice being there, something of a kind that will never happen again, I guess.
Watching the DVD after a day filled with pre-Christmas cleaning of the appartment, washing some rugs, etc, brings me some emotional nostagia coming to my mind. You Never Blow Yr Trip Forever.

On a new release, Sadayatana 051: Black City he's presenting a 3 hour set of compiled music to which he has added mystic sounds, field recordings, effects, etc.

Waves from Albert Ayler (LIM LP 1975)(Atavistic CD 2000)

Finally, at last, brought to my sublime collection of great music, this masterpiece of Swedish, openminded free jazz. Three musical masterminds from Gothenburg together as a trio; Gilbert Holmström on saxes is blowing my head off with his brilliant and intensive clever play, Kjell Jansson on double bass is stable as a rock, sometimes letting the bassnotes fly like a bird over the rock instead of being one, and Conny "Bonke-Conny" Sjökvist on drums was probably born on a drummers chair, presenting rhythms and polyrhythms as a most natural force from him. Three musicains, one body. I once had the vinyl version, but it was lost and if it ever is on sale it's for huge amounts on money, a couple of hundred dollars or so. The CD re-issue from Canadian Atavist do have three bonus track recorded in 1978 which for once makes the CD version superior to the LP (Hmmmm). Also hard to get and you have to be prepared to open up you wallet a bit. The replica of the LP cover do have a mark of a price tag in the upper right corner (which wasn't a part of the original cover design). Charming, but it also shows how hard it is to get a copy of the original.

Yours truely's favourite on-line magazine Terrascope offers this month a nice review of Numbers & Letters.
A new album by Joxfield? Oh, no, but a classic is a classic (hehe), nothing we can do anything about.

"Featuring the talents of Yan and Oax, Oxfield Projex latest offering is a sprawling triple CD-R collection the includes elements of Kosmiche Music, electronics, drone, experimental sounds and psychedelia, all blended skilfully to create a sound of their own. Those wondering about the Terrascope link may be interested to know that Oax is better known as Stefan Ek, whose delightful prose have graced the Rumbles column on several occasions and, hopefully, will do so again.

Moving swiftly on, disc one, entitled “Abstract Numbers” contains 10 pieces of music that feature guitars, synths, efx, samples and various manipulations, each has a similar feel, although there is enough variety to hold the listeners interest, with the stop/start strangeness of “have I Been Here Before” and the bubbly cut-up nature of “A Secret Door” catching my ear, whilst “balinese Jig” contains some excellent guitar noises within its grooves.

Moving on to disc two, entitled “Concrete Letters A-M”, we are greeted by the electronic groove of “In The Garden of Eden”, a Heavy bass line getting your head nodding as a Soprano sax, dances spasmodically around the room. On “Kenji Self-Unit” there is a definite Fripp influence present, whilst the excellent “Electric Apple” is a fine slice of modern psych, with more wonderful guitar playing. To be honest, the whole disc crackles with vitality, the arrangement and melodies ensuring the music shines out, alive and ready to free your mind.

Last but not least, Disc three, “Concrete Letters N-Z”, not only maintains the quality of what has gone before but actually raises it, to my mind the strongest of the three discs. First highlight is “Ruff and Tough”, a glorious wave of noise, guitars and “Wild Organ” competing to out manoeuvre each other over a solid rock beat and burbling electronics, the mood softened by the following track “Mind the Gap”, which shimmers gorgeously, with some great vocal samples adding a devotional edge. This is the perfect bridge between the noise of the previous track and the delightfully relaxing mood of “Shimmering Aohm”, the guitar just drifting in a haze, whilst subdued beats add a heartbeat to the proceeding. After the Kraut-rock roar of “Silent Night-Night Silence”, there is a strong Gong feel to the space-psych of “The Entropy is Strong” which features some wonderful flute playing, the disc finally brought to a close by “No Kro Poh”, a fragile piece with sitar, soft vocals and samples of rain, thunder and fire, sweet ambience indeed.

There you have it, Not only do these guys write for the Terrascope, they also find time to write and record some damn fine music, give them a listen, at least, they surely would appreciate it. (Simon Lewis)"

Comment: One of my favs (from Sweden) are back with a brand new release...it reminds me of the first CAN`s issue I have ever heard - CAN (1979), which is used to be ashamedly underrated by the musical press worldwide. More detailly, those subtly flowing, high-ridged guitar riffs are pulled off to the frontline, slightly danceable spaced-out washes ride into a listener`s consciousness, subdued autotuned vocals, altogether making lots of sense through dynamic jamming sessions. Space-funk, kraut-fusion etc... Hipernotik.

Here's John Coltrane's "Impressions" (Impulse A-42), a classic masterpiece as with so many others of his records. The addition of Eric Dolphy's bass-clarinette on the opener "India" - wow!!!

Being a fan of King Crimson as well as Canterburians like Soft Machine and such in the early 70's you also came across the magnificant piano player Keith Tippett. His freely floating fingers, atonal gestures fascinated.

When realising he had released some albums with his Keith Tippett Group we just had to check 'em up. "Dedicated to You, but You Weren't Listening' was great and from that one the step into Centipede's "Septober Energy" wasn't long. Four side-long tracks, a short-lived 50-piece big-band of jazz-freejazz-rock. It became an aural classic.

Please, don't ask me to explain it, but for reasons I actually don't know the "follow up" to Centipede, Keith Tippett's Ark and their album "Frames - Music for an Imaginary Film", became a hidden treasure which I discovered last year. Released on Ogun Records in 1978 (OGD 003/004), also four side-long tracks, also a big band, 20 musicians, jazz-freejazz, composed as well as improvised, well-known players like Elton Dean, Peter Kowald and Julie Tippett etc, as well as for me unknown musicians. It's an amazing album and even though it really annoys me that I didn't discover it until reasently it also makes me happy to find out there still are some unheard true tresures left. It brings light into the life of a addictional music lover.

“While standing in my kitchen doing the wash up and listening in my ghetto-blaster to the Majestic Pattern City Revisited Evolution suite from the Joxfield ProjeX very strict limited self-release album ‘The Pond Intermezzo’ (2006) I realized how goddamn good it was and that these tracks deserved being properly released. The album was originally printed in about 20 copies which mostly were given away to some of our friends. Very few copies were sold for almost nothing. The story of the suite: For the TPI sessions Yan had made a hypnotic, long pattern to which I made a 20 minutes long guitar improvisation. Due to too many wrong notes it was re-recorded once. There was more guitar terror and even more wrong notes. There was also a short, recorded sung melody. Then Yan locked himself into his room for a couple of months, re-worked the recorded music, picked up some themes from the solos, developed it, mixed it, split it, added the treated vocal parts, added some other freaky vocal parts and finally presented what’s heard here. Maybe it’s a bit accessible to have the suite split into eight parts, but the true reason was Yan’s then car stereo which refused to play too long songs, it had to be split into parts.”

Vegetable Man-Effervescent Elephant Medley

Almost forgotten about this... The story:
During the early days of our extended MySpace career we became friends with nice fellows Airwaves, a Swedish combo playing some friendly pop music. Maybe not the music we play ourself, but nevermind, they're kind people.
Once Patrik Arvidsson, the guitarplayer of Airwaves, asked us for some collaboration. The Airwaves gals and guys had a fascination for Syd Barrett and early Pink Floyd stuff and should participate on a Vegetable Man tribute album (Volume 6) with their version of Vegetable Man (connected with Effervescent Elephant).
In 2007, at the end of our "Numbers & Letters" sessions we took up the tune.
We were asked to add something after the guitar solo at 1.59 minutes ("but don't touch anything before that"), so, at 1.59 we threw out every original file of the tune except the drums and Sussie's vocals, entered Yan's fat keyboard chords and my kind-of-tribute-to-David-Gilmour's-ca-1971-playing guitar. With a good mix, great mastering and re-entery of the nice (is it?) dobro sliding it all becoame a nice piece of joint music (?!?!). The artists name used was AirwavesJoxfield.

ThanX Patrik for initiative and a believe in us playing pop music.

Somewhere there probably is an album and if you find it you can buy it, it has its moments. Enjoy!

This is SO powerful. The perfect power trio of Tony Williams on furious drumming and whispering vocals, John McLaughlin on demon guitar and Larry Young on wild organ (love his science fictional chords like from outer space), including the bass pedals. On (turn it over) mighty Jack Bruce is added on bass.
The music is expressive in more than one way and often finds it climax when all of them 3/4 climbs the peak of madness. Pure music! Gee fer it!

Joxfield ProjeX is one of the most consistently rewarding avant-garde/experimental music groups that I have featured on Free Albums Galore. The project is actually a duo by two musicians simply named Oax , who plays most of the guitars, and Yan who takes care of the keyboards. Both of them also contributes electronic effects and various other instruments to the mix . There are a few albums by them released on Clinical Archive. Yet Numbers and Letters is by far their best and most realized effort. It is also my pick for best online avant-garde/experimental music release for 2010.

One of the things that makes this album stand out is the addition of guest artists which seems to bring the best out of Joxfield ProjeX. There are just too many guests to mention but you can find them listed on the download page. However, two that tend to stand out for me are saxophonist Geoff Leigh and sitarist Håkan Almkvist. The album is over 2 hours long and is the equivalent of 3 CDs. Disc A is titled Abstract Numbers and it is a bit more introverted than the other two offerings. It is also my favorite precisely due to the quieter and serious structure that pervades through the tracks. Disc B & C are titled Concrete Letters: A-M and Concrete Letters: N-Z. They have an harder edge but still are entertainingly complex efforts. They may be a bit more challenging for the avant-garde music novice.

Those who enjoy more experimental forms of music will appreciate Numbers and Letters but the music is not so “out there” that more conventional music lovers will not enjoy it too. So download it and give it a listen.

Not too often I raise my eyebrows for old symphonic prog these days, but when I hear Eloy's 6th release, "Ocean", I must admit it's a hell of a good album. Four lengthly pieces, all including wellknown prog signs as well as space rock and - well - krautrock. If they would have their roots on The British Isles they might have had another and bigger role in the encyclopedias of Music of Inportance. 1977 was the year. Is this Punk Rock? Hell no, but give it a chance!

Attention! Mats Gustafsson - Needs!

For those who care about what happens out there:
A new LP from Mats Gustafsson. "Needs!" on the great Dancing Wayang label.
The first you see is the extremely wonderful art sleeve painting as an fold-out by Mathias Pöschl.
Then you put on the LP and if you coincidentally have no idea what you'd expect to hear you might think MG will blow you away, as you've been used to he's doing every now and then (and you love it).
But, if you've read anything about this release you'll have the feeling that this is something else.
And it is.
MG is playing with MG, the reeds man with the electronics one.
Is it music? Silly question. What IS music? Ask John Cage. He would tell you it IS music. But, who cares.
What MG does and how he does it is actually a bit unintersting. What's really intersting is how it sounds. And it just sound great, more like electro-acoustic improvisations than anything else.
And, as always with sounds of music, it speaks better for itself than if anyone, like me, is trying to pathetically explain the texture of it.
Challenge your mind, go and get it yourself!

From the land of Ikea, the Stockholm Palace, and Dolph Lundgren comes something truly massive. Joxfield ProjeX has just issued Numbers & Letters, its second 3-disc set in four years. Clocking in at 148 minutes and 24 tracks, this resembles Aunt Jude’s vegan Christmas as much as it does a record release: you’ll love some of it, you’ll hate some, and while it’s probably all really good for you, there will be leftovers for days.

Joxfield ProjeX is Stefan Ek and Janne Andersson. Friends for nearly 50 years, Ek and Andersson traded in improvised music in the late 60s and early 70s, and then fell under the radar from 1975 until 2005. After returning from extended hiatus, their output has been magnificent, at least in terms of quantity. In 2005 alone they issued a double CDR, a single CDR, and a live disc. They tendered their first 3-CDR release in 2006, at least five different releases in 2009, and a rarities collection named, inevitably, Smorgasbord in October 2010. Readers visiting their Discogs page will find the discography to be hopelessly out of date. Ek and Andersson (from here it’s “Oax” and “Yan”, their stage names) are too busy making netlabel music to bother with keeping up the books. The reader can be forgiven for asking if, at such an exhausting level of output, any of it is worth hearing.

The answer is yes, absolutely.

Disc A is titled Abstract Numbers. After a few false starts — extended keyboard and guitar jam sessions, lengthy prog-rock lessons, free-form jazz’ish, flangers set to 11 — the pot starts simmering with “Computer 2,” the last of an apparent triptych, starting with “Computer 8″ and continuing with “Computer 7.” It is an entrancing, mid-tempo ambient piece, awash with low-register synth, a slightly eastern accent and a spy movie finish. This is a good start, if only in geological terms. “Balinesean Jig” appears to be just that, a fast, African-inspired percussion rhythm atop a brief exhibition of distorted guitar chops. At under a minute, the song is far too short to leave any kind of a mark, but the following track is not. “For a Rainy Day Part 1″ is downright creepy: a complete remix of cyberpunk novelist Kenji Siratori’s “Double Bind.” The original work is noisy, admonishing and carnivalesque, in which an urgent spoken word track blankets a sparse cat-on-the-piano arrangement and electronic tinkering. The compressed, staccato, reverberating vocal work is well-served here in its industrial retrofit: processed and harsh noise, samples and feedback, the occasional squawk of guitar and flute. Devoid of melody or rhythm, it seems an odd choice for this otherwise cheery pair, but by all means it works as a one-time fix.

In other hands, “For a Rainy Day Part 1″ would have closed Disc A, but Oax and Yan opt wisely instead for a nine-minute rave. “The Conquer of TFD” is indisputably a dance track, or better yet a 140bpm treadmill run, going nowhere but going there briskly, thankfully kinetic and tangible, after nearly 40 minutes of precisely the opposite. The artsy and dissonant cello work of the final seconds is a deft touch, and a lovely one.

Discs B and C are titled, respectively, Concrete Letters A-M and Concrete Letters N-Z. The album titles prompt the listener to expect a discernible shift, a move beyond the esoteric number theory to something a bit more literal and grounded. But with such a wide-angle lens — two dozen tracks, six minute durations on average, many as long eight minutes or more — it is nearly impossible to divine any kind of course correction here. Dotted across all of Numbers & Letters are the progressive cartoon fancies of Ozric Tentacles, the crafty axeslinging of King Crimson, and the physical, sometimes frantic saxophone work of a David Lynch picture. Indeed, Concrete Letters A-M resumes exactly where Abstract Numbers left off, with six bonus minutes of house music (“In the Garden of Eden”). It seems that the central metaphor of this release is “more!”

After a second, not quite as unnerving appearance by Siratori, Concrete Letters A-M takes a fun turn with “The First Day.” The uptempo, thumping percussion and the Jews harp silliness put this reviewer to grinning like an idiot. Next, after so much emphasis on guitar and electronics, it is the drum machine that is at last given some space to breathe. Enter Geoff Leigh’s flute solo; even after 35 years, Oax and Yan hang on to their flair for improvisation. “Sanity Check” is a convincing sitar and tanpura day trip, although the song title won’t fool anyone. Disc B closes with “Dragons Fly In the Night,” where a public access channel intro and absurd Vlad the Impaler organ riff dovetail straight into a deadpan rock delivery, and conclude with all of the brass of a Terrence Trent D’Arby bit. That’s the thing about eight-minute tracks: R&B can share lodging with almost anything, as long as the songwriters mind their feng shui.

Sadly, Disc C could practically have been discarded altogether, and giving microphone time to the sort of tracks that failed Discs A and B. Where the path from Abstract Numbers to Concrete Letters A-M was obscured, a clear transition between those the last two albums sits in plain view. Here the drum beats level off, the textures dry up, and the ubiquitous improv begins strangling the craftsmanship. The finest track here is “Mind the Gap,” although by now the album has already traveled to central Asia once — for “Sanity Check” — and with much more impressive results. The listener is all but burned out on the instruction video guitar, the dazzling keyboard work, and the perambulating song structures. The tracklist even reprises the “Computer” series (numbered six, this one brings the grand total to four). By now the thing has become a lazy composition, with an uninspired drum beat and poorly-chosen synthesizer tones. To quote one of these last, flagging songs, “The Entropy is Strong.”

You have to love Joxfield, both as a musical source and as a pair of nice guys: their humor, their good nature, their unbelievable output. But Numbers & Letters is simply too long. A 148-minute opus may have a place in experimental music, but the more-is-more ethic done this way is a disservice to the listener (the interested reader might peruse their discography for one of the shorter works, say Shimmering/Mah No 1). As a collection of singles, Numbers & Letters is a success: it is a rare find indeed, to come upon a dozen tenable songs as diverse as “For a Rainy Day Part 1,” “The First Day,” and “Sanity Check.” It is frustrating, then, that the songwriters could not bring themselves to edit. Anything.

This 3-disc collection is perhaps just as valuable as a hub for discovering other talent: just look at the contributors’ list. Kenji Siratori’s collaboration with Joxfield — and with other musicians — looks quite promising, and his debut novel sounds lively (“acclaimed by David Bowie,” the copy keeps saying). At first glance, the music of cellist Sakamoto Hiromichi is moving and intelligent. Conversely, aficionados of harsh industrial noise might want to look up Churner, who makes a cameo appearance in “The Conquer of TFD.”

So Numbers & Letters is overfed, and not terribly concerned about diet or exercise. Nevertheless, it has a wardrobe full of skinny jeans, and they all make for fantastic playlists. Remember: this is netlabel music. It won’t cost you anything but your time: 6.5/10

Jazz - 3 In a Row

Right now there's a lot of Jazz Moods circulating in my living room. The sounds from various vinyl LPs on the grammophone's heard.
A couple of weeks ago I had some opportunities to see 'n' hear the majestic reeds man Mats Gustafsson in various constellations: The Thing & Otomo Yoshihide, FTJ (with Joachim Nordwall) and Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentett + 1.
At the first concert I bought the all new 11" piece of plastic "Jazz på Svenska" by Swedish Ass. a quintett featuring Mats, playing their tribute to Swedish jazz giants of the 50's and 60's, Lasse Werner and Lars Gullin, bringing their classic jazz into new territories.

Inspired by that album I just had to check whatever there was to be found by the two guys. Lasse Werner's still on my wants-list, but for Lars Gullin I found a great compilation from his famous 1951 - 1954 era,

"Danny's Dream - Lars Gullin 1951 - 1954 - The Legendary Years", a two disc set released in mid-70's by the Metronome label. Maybe not too common to hear jazz from these years on my player, but this album is just as good as I thought it should be.

I've always had some favour of British jazz from late 60's and ten years on, mostly focusing on artists from the Canterbury Scene, especially Soft Machine and artists related to them, but also people like Keith Tippett, Mike Gibbs and so on. Tippett's Centipede double disc album "Septober Energy" has always been an outstanding one for me. When checking up more of what there was to find in Tippett's catalogue including bigger bands I jumped into his 1977 project Keith Tippett's Ark and the double disc album "Frames - Music for an Imaginary Film". The band consists of 22 persons, some of them know from the Centipede Gargantua effort, others from the British jazz nad free form scene of late 60's and 70's. The 80 minutes suite in four parts is a complex piece of music, varies from strict composition to open and free improvisations, and with Julie Tippett's voice here and there, like a well-tasting spice mix this album becomes one of Tippett's best ever.
When having a little chat with Mats G during one of the concerts we talked a bit about Tippett and his music. I told him I've seen the rare "Frames" album at Harald Hult's excellent record store Andra Jazz in Stockholm, but the price was scary, 1200 kronor (about 165$). Mats consider Andra Jazz being the best and kindest record store ever, but "yes, Harald is a bit expensive...". Next time I was there the album was gone, I didn't even have to bother about the price anymore (instead I bought, yes, Swedish Ass). A couple of weeks later I bought it through the sales service at Discogs for 500 kronor (about 70$) and when it arrived I just realised what I've already heard - the album is magnificent. Ogun Records, of course.
It has been re-released on CD, but right now, who cares? Recommended!

Joxfield ProjeX Numbers & Letters (Clinical Archives)

Yet one year ago the Swedish pop music seemed to have strongly been associated with the sound of fields, sunshine and colourful flowers. You even know, such beautiful and safe, yet masterful and well-produced conceptions which fulfilled the task of muzak in the certain way. (The muzak as music is such a kind of listening object which is used to be predictable, i.e, keeping to live its own life from the very start without needing much attention and reasoning anymore). However, all my premisses were changed since I heard Joxfield ProjeX, by Yan and Oax leaded ensemble which showed up really deep and ungraspable point of view.

In fact, there has been a lot of albums within a year: Bits And Pieces# 1-13; Picnic; Virtual Dreams & Realities; Shimmering Mah No 1; Phantastique; and recently, Oddities And Rarities 2005-2010. No one of them were failed. Moreover, all the aspects of serious and intellectual-minded rock music were profoundly investigated on the aforementioned issues: from the progressive rock to the open-minded and over-the-edge-pouring space rock, ambient techno and kosmische musik conceptions.

A new one is compiled of 24 tracks (or 3 CD sets), including cooperation snippets of such luminaries as Pat Mastoletto, Geoff Leigh, and Kenji Siratori among other guests. It might be seem in comparison with the duo`s previous works it does sound more free jazz-y, incorporating the elements of pompous electro-rock/baggy-ish breakbeats, in Japanese spoken word, dream-loaded and hazy flute improvisations, ragga-rhythms and tanpura-sitar drones. However, it is obviously the first time when a release by their side seems to be a bit loose (or extrovert as it is already said), sometimes "uncomposed", based mainly on free improvised jams, or on the other side, sinking into the mould of avant-prog bottom. On the last third of the album, however, it smashes its head spot getting intensely to haze its boundaries and breaking on the other side. Though my top notch and recommendation is previously Oddities And Rarities 2005-2010, yet, those 24 tracks are very important part to get completed the whole regarding Joxfield ProjeX`s sound and conception. The whole picture of them became even more indistinct. And it is excellent, of course. By a Joker`s point of view indeed.

Has Joxfield ProjeX become a Big Band with all these guests? And is this The White Album of Joxfield ProjeX? The answer is No on both questions. When we were about to start our new recording sessions in 2007 we had decided we wanted to bring our music into territories where we had never been before. To do so we wanted to involve other people and asked around amongst artists we liked and respected and to whom we could direct a mission - contribute to our music in an open-minded and creative way. Most of those we asked generously brought their inspiration to us and went into the project, sometimes for a specific track, sometimes for many of them.
Very quick we realised it was a huge project and when it all was finished we had about 2½ hours of music we didn’t want to split up. That’s why it’s a 3 disc set. The variation of the music is the variation of our minds, that’s how we are. For those who care Disc A - Abstract Numbers is maybe a bit introvert, reflective and the Discs B & C - Concrete Letters A-Z might seem extrovert, a little bit more easy-going.
Most of the music is recorded in 2007 with lots of additional recordings, editing and treatments in 2007 - 2010.

Joxfield ProjeX is still the duo Oax and Yan playing their instruments, programming stuff, adding whatever they find reasonable to add, edit and treat.
What about the guests? Most of them do have a long and deep history of success with various bands etc, but instead of fooling both you and them and pretend this music here sounds like anything what they’ve done with those constellations we suggest you check ‘em up by your own.

Oax and Yan is back - two crazy old man is back in Sweden. And, as a rule I do not care what the old musicians do: I do not care what Robert Fripp and Holger Czukay make even Morrissey, Brett Anderson, Jarvis Cocker and the `i` i no longer feel the case against public interest. But these two 60s though a passport with an interest is languid. They are representatives of the old school, born a few years after World War II, however, make many of today's musicians for the eyes, miserably. Men are vinged makers, as they have defeated the gang last year `s King Crimson, Pat accepted and Mastoletto küberpunkar Siratori Kenji (the latter is also represented on this album).

"Smorgasboard" is undoubtedly a writer for this year's expected reliis. And once again, expectations are gullible, breaking parimadki imaginations of listeners. 12 tracking period 2005-2010, which will focus on "the rarities and veidrustele". True, it is added to the relative tautological as to be familiar with the duo earlier creations. Again, balancing the spatial ekspansiivsuse, krautrock-kosmische `i` s psychedelic music, and hypnotic electronic lõpmatusemärgi flow between and after. And when we talk about infinity, I'm doing so great reputation. It makes no sense to highlight the separate compositions, in spite of the fact that they differ greatly - so elemental as the emotional angle. Just saund it is infinite, cosmic good. I do not know exactly what could mean a "cosmic good," but this album I think of it aimavat as saund is self-sufficient, and the transcendental. You just have to take time off and let the sounds of emotions, and spirit guide. And if you watch and record label Clinical Archives plaadiümbrist diskograafianumbrit `i (402), it seems to matter even more ulmelisem. Your Inner Outer space is our space.

Life Is Funny.... Tuli RIP

Read the news today, o boy...
Well, read today, but actually not the news of today, but, anyway, on the 12th this month Tuli Kupferberg passed away at the age of 86.
Both as writer, anarcho-beat-poet, singer and composer this guy has made parts of our lives much funnier, more serious and better.
For about twelve days ago, for no specific reason, maybe just coincidential, when driving the rented car through the landscape I put on a burnt CD, 'The Fugs - Live in the 60's' and through the partly bad sound quality I heard songs and presentations of them that made my mind go spiritual clear of pure joy, songs as the Tuli epic 'Nothing', here recorded in Sweden and called 'The Swedish Nada'. Maybe an homage without knowing playing these tracks.
Otherwise, for you who have no relationship to this guy, start the journey with 'Life Is Funny', a 14 seconds happy pop tune from the 1968 album "It crawled into my hand honest":

Can't resist this piece of art.
Joe Yamanaka was the original lead singer of Flower Travelli' Band when they released their super classic Japanese prog-psych album Satori in 1971.
This live version can't be more than 5-10 years old and he still has his strange voice kept in good condition.
I have no idea who the other musicians are, but I doubt any of them are from the original FTB line up. The three drummers in a row are nice...

Just an ordinary Saturday morning, could be any day and it just is.
The sun is shining and that's nice, brings some energy to life.

On the player is Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O.'s 'Cometary Orbital Drive' (2008), a 70 minutes piece divided into four parts, based on the note sequence A-E-D-A-G-Db, repeated within the frames of various surroundings, creating a mantra-like psychedelic symphony of a kind seldom heard.

Following that is the same band's very beautiful and varied 'Univers Zen Ou De Zéro A Zéro' (2002), the extended 4 LP version. Could this be Acid Mother's best album? No-one will tell you and no-one will ever know. Band pix above is probably from around that time.

Anyway,
meanwhile working hard on the cover of the forthcoming split single by Joxfield ProjeX/Ambient Darkwhite, 'The Steak RMX'/'Death Of A Sirloin Steak'.
Stricly limited once in a lifetime pressing, out on Tin Can Music in a present future close to you.
